Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname BAGG, BAGGE, BAGGS, BACK, BACKE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

BAGG, BAGGE, BAGGS, BACK, BACKE.   A baptismal name meaning "the son of Bagg."   This surname occurs frequently in early rolls, and always without prefix.  There seems no reason to doubt its being a Scandinavian personal name.  This is confirmed by the diminutive Bagelyn (cf. Hewling) and by the entry Bagekoc, where the suffix -cock occurs, which is only added to font-names.
