A baptismal name meaning "the son of
Baldwin," from the nickname Ball
(q.v.) with suffix -cock (v. Introd. p. 26); cf. Wilcock, &c.
This has become corrupted to Bawcock, an ordinary corruption; cf. Shallcross
and Shawcross.
