Dictionary of Family Names

Origin and Etymology of the Surname BALLARD.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901, and,
An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names, by William Arthur, M. A., 1857.

BALLARD.   Bardsley has:  A nickname meaning "bald-headed."  The hair, or absence of it, gave us a large number of early nicknames, the majority of which still exist as surnames.   Ballard seems to have been very popular for a bald-headed man; v. Ball.   Professor Skeat quotes:

'And scorneden to hym saying, Stye up, ballard,' 1382:  Wyclif, 2 Kings ii. 23.

Arthur has:  BALLARD.   (Celtic and Gaelic)   From ball, a place, a round elevation; and ard, high.  The Gaelic word ballart signifies noisy, boasting.  Bal also signifies a lord.
