BALLARD.
Bardsley has: A nickname meaning "bald-headed." The hair,
or absence of it, gave us a large number of early nicknames, the majority of
which still exist as surnames. Ballard seems to have been
very popular for a bald-headed man; v. Ball.
Professor Skeat quotes:
'And scorneden to hym
saying, Stye up, ballard,' 1382: Wyclif, 2 Kings ii. 23.
Arthur has: BALLARD.
(Celtic and Gaelic) From ball, a place, a round elevation;
and ard, high. The Gaelic word ballart signifies noisy,
boasting. Bal also signifies a lord.
