BANCROFT.   Bardsley has:  A local name meaning "of the bankcroft," i.e. the enclosure on the slope.  An east Cheshire name that has many representatives in the directories of south-east Lancashire; v. Bank and Croft

Arthur has:  BANCROFT.   From the Cornish British ban, a mount, hill, or high ground; and croft, a small field near a dwelling—a green pasture.
