Dictionary of Family Names

Origin of the Surname BREESE, BREEZE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901, and,
An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names, by William Arthur, M. A., 1857.

BREESE, BREEZE.   Bardsley has:  A baptismal name meaning "the son of Rees," Welsh Ab-Rees; cf. Bethell, Bloyd, Benyon, Bowen, &c.   Breeze is an imitative form, and is a familiar surname on the South Welsh border.  Of course, Breese and Breeze are but variants of Preese or Price.

Arthur has:  BREESE   (Welsh)   A contraction of Ap Reese, the son of Reese, or Rice (which see); so Bevan from Ap Evan, Brice from Ap Rice, etc.  Brys, Welsh, agility, quickness; Bresse, a small territory in Burgundy, France.
