CATER, CATOR, CATERER.
An official name meaning "the cater," a caterer, more correctly a
cater, contracted from acatour, a buyer for a house. 'Of which
achatours mighten take ensemple': Chaucer, C. T. 'Catour of a
gentylmans house, despensier': Palsgrave. 'Catours, manciples,
spencers, cokes': 1459. Mun. Acad. Oxon., p. 346; v. Chater. The
final er in Caterer is a needless addition, as in poulterer and
upholsterer. It occurs early.
