GOLDEN, GOLDING,
GOULDEN, GOULDING, GOOLDEN, GOOLDING.
(1) A baptismal name meaning
"the son of Goldwin," q.v. For change of suffix -win
into -en, -in, and -ing, v. Godwin
and Goggin. It
was quite general before the close of the 13th century. But again French
influences are traceable. The family of Golden, Broad Chalke, co.
Wilts, are entered Golding in 1563; Goulden, 1707; and Golden,
1672 (Reg. Broad Chalke, pp. 1, 24, 70). (2) A nickname meaning
"the golden," probably from the complexion of the hair; cf. Goldenlock.
