GOSS, GOSSE.
(1) A nickname meaning "the goose"; M.E. gos; cf. Duck,
Drake, Wildgoose,
&c. Although Wildgoose still exists, our Gooses (I may not say
Geese) have now stuck to Goss as a preferable form. (2) A
baptismal name meaning "the son of Goce," whence diminutive Gocelin
or Josselin; v. Goose
(2) and Goslin.
Although the diminutive has quite overshadowed the root-name, it was decidedly
popular in its day.
