Origin of the Surname LE
BOUTEILLER.

|
LE BOUTEILLER
(Norman French) "The
butler." This name is usually said to mean "bottle," but
the exact derivation is uncertain. It could come from the same root as
"butt," Old French boter "strike, thrust," Norman buter,
which would make it related to the word "beat." Similarly,
English butt is from Old French bot (F. bout), "an end," as in the
but-end of a spear. Compare F. but, a mark; buter, "to strike,"
the latter the same as the Norman and also related to "beat." A
Butler may have been a violent warrior for hire or even for purchase. De
Buitléir is an Irish form.
