MATTHEWMAN.
An occupational name meaning "the servant or labourer of Matthew"; cf.
Perryman and
Addyman. This is one of the most familiar representatives of
this class of surname. Its origin as here deduced admits of no
doubt. Perhaps the following instance will best exemplify the
circumstances under which such a surname arose:

Willelmus Mathewman, 1379: ibid.
Magota Mathewoman, 1379: ibid.
Here are Mathew himself,
the farmer, William his hind, and Magot his kitchen wench. The two
servants took their surname from the position they occupied to their master.
