NAIRNE.
The name of a shire, river, and town in Scotland, whence the surname is
derived. The name was taken from the river, which was called in Gaelic uisge-n'fhearn,
from uisge, water, and n'fhearn (pronounced nearn, the
"fh" having no sound), "the alders""the
water of the alders," from the great number of alder-trees which grew on
its banks.
