NEWBIGGIN, NEWBEGGIN,
NEWBEGIN. A local name
meaning "of Newbeggin." Two parishes, one in the dioc. of
Carlisle and one in the dioc. of Newcastle, and many little farmsteads, &c.,
go by this name; = new building: cf. Lowland Scotch and North English big,
to build; v. Halliwell. There is also a township called Newbiggin in the
parish of Middleton-in-Teesdale, co. Durham; also a township in the parish of
Shotley, co. Northumberland; also a township in N. Rid. Yorks.
