Dictionary of Family Names

Origin of the Surname ORME, ORMES, ORMSON, ORM.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901, and, History of Christian Names,
by Charlotte Yonge, 1884, and, An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names, by William Arthur, M. A., 1857.

ORME, ORMES, ORMSON, ORM.   Bardsley has:  A baptismal name meaning "the son of Orme" (Orm, Domesday); cf. the local Urmston, Ormston, Ormsby, Ormskirk, Ormerod, and the Great Orme's Head.  In this last the meaning Orm, the serpent (whence worm), comes out, i.e. "the serpent's head."  Miss Yonge (ii. 290) says there are twenty-two Ormes in the Landnama-bok.

Arthur has:  ORME.  (French)  Local.  An elm-tree.
