A baptismal name meaning "the son of Patrick" (q.v.), from the
nickname Pate and diminutive Patt-in; cf. Colin, Robin. Patterson is a
corruption of Pattinson; cf. Matterson, Dickerson, Catterson, for Mattinson,
Dickinson, Cattinson. Patrick was a great North-English font-name in the
surname period. It would be useless furnishing many instances.
