YEATS, YEATES, YEATTS.
An occupational name meaning "the gate-man," one who had care of a
road or gate, or more simply one who lived on the road by the gate. Yate
for gate is still in common use in the North. A farm in Ulverston is
called Bowstead Yeats. v. Yates
and Yeats.
