Dictionary of Family Names

Origin of the Surname YELLOWLEY, YELLOWLY, YELLOWLEE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

YELLOWLEY, YELLOWLY, YELLOWLEE.   A local name meaning "of Yellowley," which seems to be a North-English surname.  Its meaning is simple, viz. 'the golden meadow,' whether from its yellow flowers or yellow clayey soil, I cannot say.
