Dictionary of Family Names

Origin of the Surname YEWDALL, YEUDALL, YOUDALE.

From A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by C. W. E. Bardsley, A. Bardsley, 1901.

YEWDALL, YEUDALL, YOUDALE.   A local name meaning "of Yewdale."  Probably the Yorkshire Yewdalls are sprung from some small dale of that name in the West or North Riding.  There is a Yewdale at the northern end of Coniston Lake, which seems to have originated a surname.  As the first recorded instance is found in the immediate neighbourhood of Skipton, it may be that the Coniston vale is the true parent of all the Yewdalls
